One thing island girls know is that sun, salt, and humidity are part of daily life. But they can also do serious damage to your skin. If you’re a teen living in the Caribbean (or just obsessed with island vibes), this is your go-to skincare guide. Whether you’re rushing to school, heading to the beach, or hopping on a Zoom call, these quick and effective tips will help you glow from sunrise to sundown.
Here’s how to keep your skin clear, fresh, and glowing — without overcomplicating things.
☀️ 1. Cleanse Smart (Not Too Harsh)
In hot, humid climates like Trinidad and Tobago, your skin produces more oil and sweat. That doesn’t mean you should strip your skin with harsh products.
What to do:
Use a gentle cleanser twice a day
Look for ingredients like salicylic acid (great for acne-prone skin)
Avoid over-washing (it can actually cause more oil)
💡 Tip: If you’re sweating a lot during the day, rinse with water instead of re-cleansing every time.
Recommendation: Cerave Renewing SA Cleanser. Available at Pennywise Cosmetics Nationwide.
🌊 2. Hydration is Your Secret Weapon
Many teenagers think oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer — that’s a myth.
In the Caribbean heat, dehydration can actually trigger more oil production.
What to do:
Use a lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer
Look for gel-based formulas or calming ingredients like centella asiatica
Welcome to the enchanting world of modeling, where every pose, every expression, and every stride holds the promise of storytelling through visuals. In this captivating blog post, we’re taking you behind the scenes, shedding light on the glamorous yet rigorous journey of a model as seen through the lens of a camera. Get ready to explore the artistry, dedication, and sheer elegance that go into creating those iconic shots that grace magazines, billboards, and social media feeds.
1. The Pre-Shoot Ritual: Setting the Stage for Success
Before the lights start to shine and the camera begins to capture, models embark on a pre-shoot ritual that encompasses preparation, mindset, and styling. From practicing poses to connecting with the photographer, this phase is crucial for achieving that perfect synergy between model and lens.
2. The Magic of Wardrobe and Styling:
Every photoshoot has a theme, and the wardrobe is its canvas. Whether it’s embodying a vintage icon or a modern trendsetter, models collaborate with stylists to create a visual story that resonates with the audience. The choice of fabrics, colors, and accessories adds layers of depth to the narrative being woven.
3. The Dance of Lights and Shadows:
Photography is all about playing with light and shadows. The photographer’s mastery lies in capturing the model’s essence by skillfully manipulating these elements. The interplay of natural light and studio lighting can dramatically transform the mood and impact of a photograph.
4. Posing: The Art of Expression:
Behind every breathtaking shot is a model who has honed the art of posing. From a confident power pose to a whimsical candid stance, each posture conveys a unique emotion and tells a different part of the story. Models work closely with photographers to find the poses that best capture the essence of the shoot’s narrative.
5. Capturing Emotion: Eyes that Speak Volumes:
The eyes are often referred to as the windows to the soul, and in modeling, they are an essential tool for conveying emotion. A skilled model knows how to use their gaze to evoke feelings, drawing the viewer into the world they are portraying.
6. The Chemistry Between Model and Photographer:
The collaboration between a model and a photographer is akin to a dance, where each partner’s movements influence the other’s. Building trust and understanding is key to capturing authentic moments that resonate. The magic happens when the model’s energy harmonizes with the photographer’s vision.
7. Post-Processing: Polishing the Gem:
Behind the scenes doesn’t end at the photoshoot. Once the shots are taken, skilled editors work their magic, refining colors, retouching, and enhancing details to create a final masterpiece. This step transforms raw images into the captivating visuals that grace our screens.
8. The Impact: From Runway to Magazine Covers
The end result of this intricate process is the creation of images that find their way onto the runway, magazine spreads, billboards, and social media feeds. Each photograph is a testament to the collaboration, creativity, and dedication that the model, photographer, and entire team put into the project.
The Tale of Elegance Continues:
Stepping into the shoes of a model reveals a world where beauty, creativity, and storytelling intertwine. Through the lens of a camera, models transcend into characters, breathing life into the vision the photographer aims to capture. From the art of posing to the chemistry forged between model and lens, every aspect contributes to the breathtaking imagery that graces the fashion industry and beyond. So next time you see a striking photograph, remember that behind the scenes, a journey of elegance and artistry unfolded, creating a moment frozen in time.
Here are 5 ways you can stay fit as a model in Trinidad and Tobago.
1. As a model in Trinidad and Tobago, a healthy diet is a must.

I don’t believe in this binary of good vs bad food. No one loves cheesecake more than me. The modeling industry has a long history of fostering eating disorders, like anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa due to the strict and unrealistic expectations placed on models to maintain a figure it deems as ideal. I believe that people should ensure that they have a healthy relationship with food. Instead of having a diet of either overindulgence or restriction, I believe that each meal should have a healthy balance of proteins, fibres, carbohydrates, and fats. I am not a dietitian. So please seek professional assistance in coming up with a diet plan that best suits your needs.
What I can do is suggest the places in Trinidad and Tobago, where I believe, would you can acquire great healthy options:
Central Market in Port of Spain
Chaguanas Market
Tunapuna Market
Scarborough Market in Tobago (been a while since I have been but it was fairly reasonably priced.
Local vendors that sell fruits and vegetables on the highway
Tru Value
Xtra Foods
Better Deals
Additionally, we live in a country that has many fruits that are indigenous to us. Caribbean people are altruistic in nature. As such, people are always willing to share whatever fruits that they have harvested for the season. Models in Trinidad and Tobago can stay fit by adding fruits such as grapefruit, oranges, plums and mangoes to their diets.
2. Hiking is a great way to stay fit as a model in Trinidad and Tobago

One of the advantages of living in a beautiful island paradise is that there is plenty of areas where one can go to connect with nature, as well as exercise. I started hiking this year and it has been a wonderful experience. Not only do I get my cardio workout for the week, but I also choose simple trails that any beginner like myself can enjoy. As a result of taking up this practice, I feel more energized not just throughout the day but in the week ahead. Unless you are going on dangerous trails (in that case you will need to get a guide), any beginner can do it. It is a great way to stay fit as a model in Trinidad and Tobago.
Places I can recommend are:
St. Michael’s Road in Tacarigua
Mount Tabor
Caura Recreational Pool 1 and 2
Lopinot Historical Complex
3. Going to the gym

In addition to hiking, on occasion, I go to the gym. My gym of choice is CLX Gym in The Centre of Excellence, Macoya. Models should make use of the 24-hour gyms that are popping up everywhere. They are very convenient as you can fit them into your schedule when you have free time.
For runway modeling, it is customary for models to wear high heels. High heels can be extremely uncomfortable especially, the stiletto type. I have found that when I increased strength training, that it has improved my ability to stay in high heels for longer periods of time. Additionally, it can also be of assistance in photoshoots. http://jeannemariethompson.com/
4. Try Exercising at home

While I have been to the gym a few times, nothing is more cost-effective than exercising at home. There are so many fitness instructors on Youtube, who provide free sessions without the use of expensive equipment. You can get great workouts in little as ten minutes to an hour without treadmills and other exercise machines. My favourite fitness gurus are Chloe Ting and Caroline Girvan. They suit my fitness goals. If you would like to purchase equipment, there is Sports and Games, Kenny’s Sports, or Facebook’s Market place. Some people use water bottles as weights as an inexpensive alternative. Many models in Trinidad and Tobago have full time jobs, as well are parents. Those responsibilities can take up so much of our time, so it may be difficult to commit to a day at the gym or hiking. It is marvelous that we have free programs online that can help us stay fit as models in Trinidad and Tobago, without having to leave home and wouldn’t take up too much of our time.
5. Avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and smoking

No one loves the occasional glass of wine more than me, so I will not tell anyone that they should go completely cold turkey. However, it is very common for models who are usually quite young, to get caught up in a party lifestyle which includes copious amounts of alcohol, drugs, and smoking. These can have lasting effects later in life.
